How to plan 5 days in Bali

Five days is my favourite length for a first Bali trip — enough to mix culture, nature and beach time without living in the car. Here's a relaxed plan I'd suggest to a friend, plus a few honest local tips.

Bali is bigger and busier than people expect, so the trick is to base yourself well and not try to do everything. This route keeps drives sensible and leaves room to slow down.

Day 1 — Arrive & settle in the south

Land, get a Bali airport transfer to your hotel in Seminyak, Canggu or Sanur, and take it easy — a beach sunset and a good dinner. Jet lag is real, so don't over-plan day one.

Day 2 — Ubud & the rice terraces

Head up to Ubud for art, the palace and the Tegallalang rice terraces. This is an easy Ubud day, and a great first taste of the island's culture. Stay overnight in Ubud to save backtracking.

Day 3 — Highlands & a volcano sunrise

If you're up for an early start, do the Mount Batur sunrise tour, then cool off at a waterfall or the hot springs. Prefer a lie-in? Swap in temples and a coffee plantation instead.

Day 4 — Temples, waterfalls or islands

Pick your flavour: the east coast water palaces and Lempuyang's gates, the northern waterfalls, or a day trip to Nusa Penida. A full-day private tour makes any of these stress-free.

Day 5 — Beach, spa & fly home

Save the last day for the beach, a massage, and last-minute shopping near your hotel, then an easy transfer back to the airport. A gentle finish beats a rushed one.

Local tips

  • Don't base yourself too far north — long daily drives eat your holiday.
  • Mornings are golden — popular spots get hot and crowded by midday.
  • Getting around: scooters are fun but risky in traffic; a private driver is comfortable and lets you actually see the view.
  • Carry small cash for entrance fees and warungs.
